Editor Faye Fornasier and guest blogger Dr.Rodgers hit the fields in Suffolk for the 5th edition of Latitude Festival.  Everyone and everything was there, from Hanif Kureishi to Kate Tempest, Heather Philipson to Josie Long, Vampire Weekend to Roving Unicorns (real, moving unicorns, not a band), and you can read all about it on our Nutshell Blog.

Nutshell #2

Nutshell is a different prospect again. The cheapest of the three at a bargainous £3.50, its current issue carries interviews with Don Paterson (during which he tells the well-prepared interviewer: “Oh, you’re good.”) and Simonetta Agnello Hornby and runs to 80 pages. The contents are black and white, but this doesn’t diminish much from the art – photography, collage, line drawings and computer art all feature. Again, the quality of the writing is nothing to be sniffed at, even though nearly every contributor was a new name to me. Their website is also rather spiffy, and the editors keep the blog regularly updated with more articles and news.

CCTV In Use hangs slipshod on the lintel –
uncertain star protecting German shepherds
(poly-resin moulded) a lantern at each throat,
silently watching their flocks of jubilant gnomes.

No wind turns the mill wheel: a plastic fish
struggles mutely on its line, unseen by mallards
that baste in tin foil lakes, and wait for tidemarks
of discarded fir along next month’s pavement.

So This Is Christmas seeps beneath
the pzschizsh of Polish builders laying roof tiles.
Twitching lights wink back a semaphore
of gaudy gladness and passers-by with smiles

attempt to catch the who and why of
private lives ventriloquised in garden bric-à-brac.
Groundsel, yellow starred, shoots a crack beneath the steps.
No faces at the pane. Just a cactus patient in its pot.
